NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - When CNN/Money asked readers how rising gas prices are affecting them, our in-box was flooded with stories of budget cutting, initiating gas-saving strategies, switching cars...and even jobs.

But quite a few people wrote in to tell us how gas at $2.50 has motivated them to make some positive changes in their lives.

Here is a sampling:

  • "I bike 15 miles to work each day, and take the bus home in the afternoon. My daily commute cost fell from $11 per day to $5. Perhaps an even bigger benefit is that I'm getting in shape and shedding weight. The early-morning 1 hour bicycle ride travels through quiet neighborhood streets and provides me with solitary time between the whirlwind of family and work. It has actually become the highlight of my day." -- David M.
  • "Gas prices are ridiculous -- but it helped me rethink my lifestyle. I no longer go out for lunch from my office and eat fast food. I cook my own food an bring lunch to the office. In that way, I save on gas, my car mileage and I eat healthy home cooked food. For all you guys out there, who live in the south, as I do, it might also save us from the scorching heat outside." -- Peter P.
  • "Living in Boston, driving and parking were both stressful and expensive. Now I walk to the T station and ride the subway, which provides me with 1 hour a day of reading." -- Ed S.
  • "For me and my family it is cut-back time. We used to go out and eat supper twice a week. Go out bowling or to a dance, or even take the kids shopping. But it's time to save for the up-coming month. I look at it this way: We are now spending more time with the family and finding things to do at home."
  • "I have chosen to take public transportation the 1.7 miles to work and I walk home. It's so much easier than fighting L.A. traffic and paying $2.80 for a gallon of gas so I can sit in that traffic and burn it up. Plus I get a nice afternoon stroll through Beverly Hills. Can't beat that." -- Sharon
  • "I have started riding my bike the four miles to work once a week; I get a good workout, cut down my gas consumption and pollution, and it takes me the same amount of time." -- Joe
