Facing loss, Lehman may raise $4B - report
Lehman's impending earnings losses could exceed $300 million: report.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Lehman Brothers Holdings may raise billions of dollars to deal with an expected loss of hundreds of millions in the second quarter, according to a news report.
Lehman, the venerable but battered financial firm, may raise up to $4 billion, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.
The bank is expected to report a loss in excess of $300 million - its first loss since going public - the week of June 16. The banking firm has already raised $6 billion in the last year.
Lehman's (LEH, Fortune 500) stock price dropped 8% on Monday, following negative reports from financial analysts.
The financial sector has been crippled by the subprime mortgage disaster, prompting J.P. Morgan's (JPM, Fortune 500) absorption of Bear, Stearns, and triggering heavy stock price declines this year for Goldman Sachs (GS, Fortune 500) and Morgan Stanley (MS, Fortune 500).
