NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Just 4-1/2 months after setting record highs, the average price of regular unleaded gasoline is above $2 a gallon in only 3 states and the District of Columbia, according to a survey released Sunday.

The average price of gasoline is below $2 a gallon in 47 states, according to the survey compiled for motorist group AAA and reported on its Web site. It is lowest in Missouri, at $1.553 a gallon, followed by Oklahoma at $1.651.

Alaska, Hawaii and New York are the only states that remain above $2 a gallon, along with the nation's capital, according to AAA. Alaska is highest at $2.78, followed by Hawaii at $2.722; prices in both states increased slightly from Saturday.

New York's average is $2.199 and Washington, D.C., is at $2.044.

The national average price fell 0.2 cent Sunday to $1.825 a gallon, AAA said. The price has fallen for 74 consecutive days and is the lowest it has been since Dec. 16, 2004, when it was $1.822.

The average price has fallen nearly 56% from the record-high $4.114 set July 17. It is down nearly 68 cents a gallon in the past month, and more than $1.25 a gallon from a year ago.

Information in the survey is compiled by Oil Price Information Service and is taken from credit card transactions at more than 85,000 filling stations nationwide. To top of page
