Auto czar said to be involved in pension probe
Steven Rattner was involved in payments related to investigation into alleged kickback scheme at New York state's pension fund, Wall Street Journal says.
LONDON (CNNMoney.com) -- Steven Rattner, head of the U.S. government's auto task force, is part of a probe into an alleged kickback scheme at New York's state pension fund, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The newspaper, citing a source familiar with the matter, said Rattner, who co-founded investment firm Quadrangle Group, was involved with payments being scrutinized by the New York attorney general's office and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
State and federal authorities have been looking into fees investment firms allegedly made to intermediaries in exchange for access to New York state's $122 billion pension fund, the report said.
Rattner left Quadrangle earlier this year when he became the head of the U.S. government's auto task force. Neither he nor Quadrangle has been accused of wrongdoing, the newspaper said.
Rattner told the U.S. Treasury Department about the investigation before President Obama took office, a Treasury spokeswoman told the Journal.
