Gap co-founder dies
Donald G. Fisher co-founded the $14 billion retailing giant 40 years ago in San Francisco.
SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney.com) -- Gap announced on Sunday that Donald G. Fisher, co-founder of Gap Inc. died at the age of 81.
Fisher and his wife Doris founded the retailer forty years ago in San Francisco after a frustrating experience returning a pair of jeans that didn't fit, according to a press release from the company. Gap, which is named after the "generation gap" went on to become a retail clothing giant, with sales of $14.5 billion in fiscal 2008.
Gap has more than 3,100 stores worldwide and a number of other brands including Banana Republic and Old Navy.
Donald Fisher was Gap's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 1995. He gave up the CEO role in 1995, and later stepped down as Chairman of the Board in 2004, but remained a company Director and Chairman Emeritus until his death.
