Status: Plans to enter U.S. Market

CODA Automotive in Santa Monica, Calif., designs and builds lithium-ion battery systems and electric vehicles. It has raised $125 million in venture capital since 2007. "Coda" is a musical term that denotes the ending of one event and the beginning of another.

The CODA sedan, a reengineered Chinese car designed by Pininfarina, is a five-passenger all-electric sedan built in Oakland with a claimed range of 90 to 120 miles. The body and chassis will be built in China and shipped to California for the installation of the battery system.

The CODA will selI for $37,400 after federal tax savings. Deliveries are due to begin later this year. The company expects to put 14,000 CODA vehicles on the road in California within 12 months.
