1987 GM Sunraycer solar car
Built to participate in a 1,864-mile solar car race across Australia, the Sunraycer weighed just 390 pounds and could go up to 70 miles per hour. It won the race easily.
The most important feature in the Sunraycer may have been its power control technology, the software and computers that control how the electric power is used, which paved the way for technologies used in future electrically-driven vehicles.
