High price: Kiawah Island, S.C.

The beaches and golf courses on this exclusive barrier island are consistently rated among the top in the U.S. The one hotel here is pricey (rooms start at $460 a night), but you can get a three-bedroom vacation home for around $365 a night in summer, according to HomeAway.com.

Low price: Dominican Republic

Because the D.R. doesn't have the brand recognition of other Caribbean destinations, you can usually find lower prices. The average rate for an all-inclusive here is half that of Jamaica's: Three-star Hotel Iberostar Bavaro in Punta Cana is $157 a person (kids under 12: $79), with board, in spring and summer.

Tip: You can save at least 25% on lodging for beach vacations if you choose a hotel that's not oceanfront, says agent Caroline Wood of Brownell Travel.
