This suburban Detroit area made its name as a developmental center for General Motors. It had a huge percentage of engineers in residence, giving the town a well-educated and well-compensated workforce.

Even today, after the near-demise of the American auto industry, the median family income here is near $80,000. That offsets the slightly higher (but still reasonable) prices for homes.
