Rare coins from a $23 million auction

Eric Newman of St. Louis spent about $7,500 building a collection of 1,800 coins that sold for $23 million in a recent auction. Here are some highlights from the collection.

1799 B5 and BB157 Silver Dollar

1799 split

Sold for: $822,500

Heritage Auctions described this as the "finest known 1799-dated dollar," as well as the best surviving dollar from the era with a draped bust and heraldic eagle. It was in Newman's collection for over 50 years.
