1979: Dassault Mirage 4000

paris air show

Dassault's sleek delta-winged Mirage 4000 debuted at the '79 show.

This fighter boasted a maximum speed of more than twice the speed of sound.

The Mirage 4000 made historic improvements in the use of lightweight carbon composite materials. Dassault says it was the world's first aircraft to have part of its tail -- called the vertical stabilizer -- made from a carbon-coated composite.
