2015: An electric airplane turns heads

paris air show

Airbus' E-Fan -- a two-seat, twin-engine, zero-emissions, electric prototype -- flew at the Paris Air Show in 2015, about a year after its maiden flight.

The E-Fan's ducted fan engines were powered by two electric motors fueled by lithium-ion batteries.

Airbus canceled plans to develop an E-Fan trainer earlier this year.
