Some post offices already offer such services as signing up young men for the draft or taking passport applications. But officials believe those services could be expanded nationwide.
The Postal Service could also set up a terminal for public use where citizens without Internet access could sign up for such things as Social Security benefits.
Without help from Congress, the Postal Service will not only default on payments for retiree health care benefits, but it could lack cash for operations by mid-October.
