Americans are working fewer hours, partly due to the rise in part-time jobs. These people want full-time work, but can only find part-time gigs.
I graduated a year ago with my masters in marine science and I currently work three jobs -- two days a week as a program manager with a local marine research institute, three days a week as a spatial analyst with a metropolitan planning organization, and as a professional diver on the weekends.
It can be tough because sometimes I'll go two or two-and-a-half weeks without a day off. It's hard on me and my marriage. As much as I work, I still earn about half of what my wife earns as a middle school teacher.
I believe that networking is crucial to finding a job. I volunteer for different non-profit groups and maintain positive professional relationships with many people in my field. So all I'm doing is working hard and being patient for that full-time job to come around.
