Vermont has the most artisanal cheesemakers per capita and this one-day festival -- which hosts more than 100 cheesemakers and other vendors -- revolves around workshops on such topics as pairing stinky cheeses with the right wines; cheesemaking; and cooking with cheese.
It takes place at the Shelburne Farms Coach Barn on the shores of Lake Champlain. Nearby is the Shelburne Museum, which houses an extensive collection of art and Americana. Families with small children may also choose to take a tour of the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, less than 10 minutes away.
Have some extra time? There's also plenty of opportunities to go fishing, swimming and sailing and to visit historical sites like Fort Ticonderoga.
