Slowing home sales and harsher credit standards due to the mortgage crisis hurt consumer spending for the big-box home improvement chain. But it's still closing the gap with competitor Home Depot, whose dissatisfied customers are defecting. Plans to open 20 new stores in areas hit hardest by the housing meltdown were shelved in March, but the company is continuing with its plans to open 120 other locations by the end of the year. Profit for the year fell 9.5%.
