The world's largest package-delivery company suffered in 2008 as a drop in consumer spending hurt shipping volumes everywhere. The effect was blunted somewhat by rival DHL's decision to leave the U.S. domestic market, opening up more share for United Parcel Service and archrival FedEx, but a deal that would allow UPS to fly DHL's freight in the U.S. has yet to be finalized.

In order to deal with the slowdown, the company has cut or reduced some operations, frozen executive salaries and is suspending its 401(k) match. - J.Y.
