Why it's admired

The German automaker is off to a good start in 2011, with a strong focus on sales of its luxury lines and more aggressive sustainability goals.

Lately, the company has been pushing a line of electric cars. BMW already released a compact electric car in 2009, and is now preparing for the rollout of a larger model, called the ActiveE. The German auto company, well-regarded for its elite line of luxury cars, including its British Rolls Royce and Mini Cooper lines, is clearly pushing an eco agenda. --T.M.
