Ankeny residents are an active bunch. Boating, hiking, and camping at nearby Saylorville Lake and Big Creek State Park is popular among families; children take advantage of the skate park, aquatic center, and the impressive 120-acre Prairie Ridge Sports complex. John Deere's Des Moines Works -- which manufactured ammunition during WWII -- is the town's largest employer. Unfortunately, other Ankeny companies have been doling out pink slips. On the bright side, the employment opportunities of Des Moines are just 10 minutes away. --D.G.
