The big problem with Grosse Ile, as with many Detroit-area towns, is that the auto-industry-dependent economy is in rough shape.
But the affluence of residents on this quiet island in the Detroit River is still very much in evidence. The multiple country clubs and parks here are protected by an open-space program. Housing options vary from apartments to million-dollar waterfront homes, and residents have lower taxes and higher property values than those living on the mainland. --D.G.
