This charming rural town has done a great job preserving its historic district, Tolland Green, which dates to the 1700s. While Tolland is home to several businesses--tech firms Gerber Scientific and CNC Software are based here--many residents commute to Hartford, 22 miles away. The University of Connecticut, 10 miles from here, provides cultural as well as job opportunities. And the town’s two popular parks provide a slew of athletic fields, hiking trails, and a swimming area for families to enjoy. --N.D.
