Gas Pains: 'We're very frustrated'
Readers write in on how they're coping with rising gas prices-and to vent a little too.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Just when Americans had gotten complacent again, the recent rise in gas prices has caught many by surprise. Prices had settled down since last fall's spike to $3 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. On Tuesday, the government said the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline would average $2.62 this summer, and $2.40 a gallon in 2007.
CNNMoney.com readers writing in the past week to gas prices@cnn.com say they're already feeling the pinch -- and many are mad about it. Tom writes: "With gas prices up more then 50 cents this year alone here in Connecticut, my wife and I are facing $200 more in gas spending than a year ago. On top of it, the local electricity provider raised its price by more then 20 percent. A year ago I would have considered us a middle class household but now we are struggling to pay the bills. All you can do is cut back on other expenses, like going out to dinner, lunch or buying clothes. This will hurt the economy badly sooner or later." Lynn: "Our whole family has had to cut back spending. Exxon's record profits speaks for itself. A lot of people are very frustrated." J. Buckner: "The increase in price has caused cutbacks for me and my family. We don't go as much or spend as much as we used to. Also no vacation this year. We plan to do something at home or very close to home." Tim Griffith: "I drive 120 miles for work a day - it's come to a point where I have do decide if I want to work here anymore. After a perfect annual review I got such a miniscule raise that it wouldn't cover one day of gasoline use. Thanks for letting me rant." Louise: "I have a new car and I can not afford to go anywhere. I am 63 years old, worked all my life and now can not enjoy my new car other than doing errands around town. Such a sad world we live in." Connie: "Talk about a pain -- gas prices here in Northern Maine (Fort Kent to be exact) are $2.85, just 3 cents lower than Honolulu! I own a really reliable car but when it's time to fill up my little 4cyl, it costs about $40. I have decided to ride my bike now, even if there is still snow on the ground here." |
