A glass of Château Lafite -- for $4,650
A double magnum of the 1865 vintage sold for $111,625 at Sotheby's auction house, a record for a wine sale.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - A double magnum of 1865 Château Lafite sold for a record $111,625 at auction, Sotheby's said. The bottle, which was the oldest in a sale by one owner, was purchased by a European private collector over the telephone, for an average price of $4,650 a glass, the auction house said. The price was nearly triple the highest presale estimate.
The bottle belonged to Massachusetts and Florida-based businessman Russell H. Frye, who collected more than 8,500 bottles of wine over the last 10 to 15 years, according to the auction house. It was previously purchased at Heublein Auction in Boston on May 27, 1982, and subsequently at Sotheby's New York on Dec. 1, 2001, Sotheby's said. Among other highlights at the sale was a case of 1989 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which sold at a record for the case at auction and twice its estimate. ----------------------
