Serwer: Getting a Big Blue bargain
A bang up report from IBM adds to the buy and hold argument, while Wipro keeps on chugging.
NEW YORK (Fortune) -- It's earnings season in earnest. Some will be up (IBM), some will be okay (Intel), and some will be soft (Yahoo). Overall the picture is perfectly fine, ya dig? See below...
IBM: Ah yes, Big Blue. Not so blue. Company beat the hell out of forecasts. Revenue up 5 percent. And profits, boffo! Up 50 percent. Stock is up over 5 percent in the premarket. IBM has been drooping since early in 2005. The question with this company always is, how are they going to grow the top line, revenues? And how can they continue to grow profits faster without accounting gimmicks. I think they're learning. Software is the big driver, but Lenova seems to be holding its own for now. The stock (Charts) is not so expensive now. Good buy and hold.
WIPRO: (not to be confused with Beck's EPro) Speaking of software, Wipro which is the mega Indian outsourcing software firm, reported that its profits climbed 48 percent in the latest quarter. Company said that it had dozens of new outsourcing orders from around the globe. Some 77 percent of Wipro's sales came from abroad, 51 percent from the U.S. Ticker here is WIT (Charts). This is clearly a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" play. I bet this stock beats the market over the next five years....
WDFC: Yup, WD-40 (Have you ever said the name of that product in a Ronald Reagan voice?: "Well...I love to spray WD-40 on Democrats.") Company reports earnings after the bell. Stock (Charts) has beaten the market over the past five years, which seems strange because WDFC seems to violate a cardinal rule of investing. That is: Don't buy a one product company. But actually WD-40 makes all sorts of lubricants. You just know the blue and yellow can. Wonder what percent of U.S. households have a can? I'll tell you what, a lot of 'em.
Loose Change: So yesterday I was walking do the street in Manhattan singing "I'm Hans Christian Andersen!" Why was I getting looks? ... All kinds of Streetlife readers bring their kids to Hooters. Okay! Okay! Who knew? (Do they have a kids menu?) ...This from reader BJ: "Could give my site a shout out at www.walkacrossmass.com. I am walking across the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts, from the border of New York to the tip of Cape Cod, collecting personal messages in a notebook for the next governor. After his (or her) inauguration I will present it to him/her." Cool BJ, but the only reason I would walk across Mass would be to get the hell outta there!
