Luxury SUVs were the last SUV type to see sales decline in a big way as gas prices rose. Buyers of vehicles like the Lincoln Navigator, shown here, simply didn't seem to care what it cost to fill them up with gas.
Ford has sold 11,737 Navigators so far this year, a rate that's about 34% behind last year. General Motors is seeing its Cadilac Escalade similarly running behind last year. The longer Cadillac ESV, popular with fleets, is just 28% behind last year's sales pace.
One big exception among big luxury SUVs was Toyota's Lexus LX. Sales for that newly redesigned SUV, based on the also-redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser, were more than double over last year. Still, with 647 sold in September, its sales are still far lower than those for the competing Navigator or Escalade.
