"There's no hope in sight," said Edmunds.com's Jesse Toprak speaking about large SUVs.
It's not unusual to see $10,000 worth of incentives on vehicles like these, he said, and those that are selling are the ones with huge incentives.
Even with big "Employee Pricing" discounts, September sales for the Chevrolet Tahoe were half what they were last year. For the full first nine months of the year, Tahoe sales were off about 30%. Sales declines for the nearly identical GMC Yukon were similar.
Sales for the competing Toyota Sequoia were actually up substantially, thanks to a redesigned model. For the first three quarters of 2008, its sales are actually up almost 40%. The Sequoia still sells in far lower numbers than the Tahoe and Yukon, though.
