But this Wrangler is driven by a system similar to the Chevy Volt's. It will drive on battery power for up to about 40 miles. As the battery runs low, a gasoline engine will start up to generate more electricity.
The production version might not be a Wrangler at first, but Chrysler will introduce some sort of electric vehicle in 2010. Other options are a minivan, based on the Chrysler Town & Country or Dodge sports car housed in a two-seat Lotus body.
Chrysler promises that the first vehicle will quickly be followed by others. All will be based on existing products that will also be available in gasoline-only form.
That's the key to the company's electric car strategy. Chrysler's electric vehicles might not be as tech-heavy and sexy as the Volt, but Chrysler wants to make more of them more cheaply, creating a line-up that the automaker says is critical to its future.
