Ex-Republican Bob Barr represented Georgia's 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. After leaving office, he launched a political and business consulting firm, Liberty Strategies. The Atlanta-based company's main focus is one of Barr's pet issues: privacy.
"I founded the firm to fill a gap that I saw with regard to how companies and small businesses deal with the tremendous burden of privacy regulation," Barr says. "Companies need to recognize that privacy of information needs to be an important and conscious part of their overall business strategy."
Barr, a former board member of the National Rifle Association, left the GOP in 2006 to become a Libertarian. Now one of the frontrunners for the Libertarian presidential nomination, Barr promises to make "dramatic changes" to the U.S. government's privacy policies.
"In a Barr administration there would no longer be a presumption that government is entitled to whatever information it wants from businesses or individuals," he says.
As president, he would veto any legislation that would increase the size or cost of the federal government, and would axe the departments of Commerce, Education and Energy: "There's no need for them," Barr says.
