5 spots for fall foliage
It's that time of year, and the leaves are starting to change. Here are five easy-to-get-to spots with stunning views of nature's handiwork.
Why it's worth the trip: About an hour east of Portland, Hood River provides a good base for exploring the Columbia River Gorge and traveling the Columbia River Highway.
You're talking the Pacific Northwest at its most scenic, but in the fall the area puts on an even greater show, as the "colorful display of big-leaf maple, cottonwood and Oregon ash trees is unmasked," according to the Travel Channel.
The highway, the first of its kind to be designated a National Historic Landmark, takes you through the gorge, following a 74-mile path to let you take in the waterfalls, canyons and cliffs that are part of the gorge.
Peak of the season: Mid September to mid October.
