What's onboard: The newest ship in Holland America's fleet, the 1,900-passenger Noordam has outside cabins averaging 250 square feet, among the biggest of its class and sufficiently large for a family of four. Kids six months and up are welcome, and the Noordam has a program for children ages three to 12 and another for teens.
With a spa, a casino, a piano lounge and activities from cooking classes to karaoke, there's plenty for Mom and Dad to do too. But unless you can tolerate splashing and shrieking, this isn't ideal for kidless adults.
What's to see onshore: The itinerary doesn't include overnights, and you'll spend two days at sea. But the stop in Barcelona is long: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. That's enough time for a three-hour bike ride through the old town's squares ($150) or a driving tour from a 13th-century cathedral to the site of the 1992 Olympics ($50). Hit the beach on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Then give Junior an edge in history class with a walk through the ruins of Carthage in La Goulette, Tunisia.
Alternatives: Carnival, Costa and Disney are all known for offering family-friendly itineraries and activities.
