Back in Belém, the fruit market is open. Most of the fruit that arrives here is not for EarthFruits but for local commerce. The market, called Ver-o-Peso (translated: see-the-weight), welcomes the boats in the middle of the night. The workers sleep on the ground until 3 am, when the unloading and negotiating begins, lasting until 7 am. Because the fruit perishes after its first day off the tree, the competition is fierce.
