Dahon Matrix
Next we tried the Dahon Matrix ($800), a foldup bike that features 26-inch wheels and great suspension. Dahon's LockJaw folding hinges allow you to store the bike efficiently in an office cube or car trunk. This bike offers a smooth ride, thanks to a hydraulically dampened fork that makes city potholes bearable. (You can lock out the fork when cruising on smoother tarmac.)
The team and I found the Matrix difficult for taller riders. I'm six feet tall and felt I was riding too far forward to pedal efficiently. Shorter riders may do better. The Dahon weighs 30 pounds - quite a load to maneuver on steep hills, but its 24 gears help. The build quality and the suspension make it a strong choice for cruising about town. But as ever, you should get fitted by a bike shop first.
