All you need
While basic gold-panning gear hasn't changed much since the gold rush - you still need a bucket, a pick and shovel, plus pans and sieves - you can now increase your take with more expensive machines that speed the process of rinsing and separating gold from dross. At the Happy Camp prospecting store, plastic pans cost $10.95. They are recommended instead of the original metal dishes used by forty-niners - which freeze your hands in the water and burn them in the sun. Amateur gold hunters' prospects are best in California, but there are also opportunities in West Virginia, Arizona, and Alaska.
