Gold prospects
The price of precious metals and other tangible assets tends to soar in a struggling economy. Gold was worth $300 an ounce in September 1998, and has skyrocketed to a record high of $1,000 an ounce ten years later. Although it's hard to dig up a sizable haul in a weekend, panners claim that they can, with difficulty, support their families on the flakes, flecks, and nuggets that they find.
