Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid
GM won't let all that research and engineering go to waste, though. The Vue's plug-in technology will appear in some other small GM SUV in the early part of 2011, just before these new fuel economy rules take effect.
Other carmakers have plans for plug-in hybrids too. These vehicles will operate like regular, no-plug hybrids in which the wheels will be spun by both gasoline and electric power. Unlike no-plug hybrids, these vehicles will be able to take on extra electricity from an outlet rather than relying solely on power generated by their own engines. That could give them fuel economy numbers over 100 miles per gallon, another big help to the bottom line.
