Unemployment rate: 5.2%

At the heart of Dane County is the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and from there flows a highly skilled and educated workforce. Initiatives between the college and the county have fostered many local businesses and start up companies that, in return, provide jobs for those in the community.

In addition to the university, the Wisconsin state government is the area's other biggest employer. But recently, the economy has moved away from government-centered jobs as more biotech health services companies, including Covance, Epic Systems and Meriter Health Services, moved in to support the university's hospital and medical school.
