The Sunshine State has reversed course. After many years on the plus side of the net migration ledger, Florida has lost more residents than it gained for the second straight years.
Few places fell victim as badly to the 2000's speculative real estate bubble than did south Florida. Now, after years of double-digit price declines, there are still tons of unsold condominiums lining the residential streets of Miami and other cities.
Much of Florida's economy was tied to its relentless growth. With that on hold, the unemployment rate has skyrocketed to 11.5% in November from a microscopic 3.3% during the summer of 2006.
And that means not even retirees are enough to bulk up its population.
