In 1985, Hanz Scholz toured Europe on an early-model, poorly designed folding bicycle. The trip left him with a sore butt, but it inspired him to create a high-performance folding bike. Working with his brother, Alan, in a garage in Eugene, Ore., Scholz came up with the Bike Friday.
With top-end components and rugged-yet-light steel construction, the bike feels stable at high speeds but is still compact enough to fold neatly into an airline regulation-size suitcase.
