On November 23, Oprah Winfrey gave keys away to each of her 275 audience members, good for a free 2012 Volkswagen New Beetle. When questions were raised why the German automaker gave away a couple of hundred cars at a cost of an estimated $5 million, it was explained that VW was anxious to pass Toyota as the top automaker in the world and the extra volume would help. After all, if VW was only looking to make a splash, it would have given away 273 Bentleys, Lamborghinis, or Bugattis, which it also makes.
