Tight on cash, Jersey City decided to redistribute the $100,000 it typically spends on a 20-minute fireworks display to instead preserve 20 other concerts and cultural events the city hosts during the summer.
"While we are disappointed that we have to cancel our well-attended annual Fourth of July celebration, it only made sense during this difficult economic time to spread the funding out across several events in different parts of the city," said Mayor Jerramiah Healy.
By eliminating the July 4th festivities, the city will save on police, fire and sanitation costs that run about $183,000. City officials expect most residents will opt to catch Macy's fireworks on the Hudson River.
