Savings: $75,000
After cutting $24.4 million and 266 jobs to meets its 2010 budget, Colorado Springs canceled its annual sky show for the second year in a row.
The city usually solicits $45,000 in corporate sponsorships to fund the fireworks display and live symphony performance. But it has to pony up $75,000 in city funds to pay for police and other services. This year, sponsors fell through again because of the challenging economy.
Last year, the city was invited to celebrate with the Fort Carson army base; this year, it plans to tag along for the U.S. Air Force Academy's festivities. Colorado Springs hopes to resurrect its own fireworks show in 2011.
NEXT: Stamford, Conn.
