Savings: $150,000
After eliminating 10% of city jobs and instituting a hiring freeze, Stamford is focused on reining in spending.
"Although it's a popular event, we just couldn't justify laying off two or three additional workers for the sake of 15 minutes of fireworks," said Fred Flynn, Stamford's director of administration.
The annual big bang show only costs the city $40,000, but public safety and other related expenses rack up the day's bill to $150,000, Flynn said.
