Get paid to cut your fuel bills (hurry!)
Install new energy-efficient windows -- a job that runs about $10,000 for the average home, according to Remodeling magazine.

You won't just lower your energy bills by as much as 15%, you'll also be able to grab a federal tax credit of 30% of the windows' cost. (The max credit is $1,500 and the work must be done by Dec. 31.)

Several other home improvements also qualify. Go to Energystar.gov for more info and to make sure that the products you intend to use get the nod from the feds.

"Not every Energy Star-rated product does," warns Ronnie Kweller of the Alliance to Save Energy.
