Where to visit: Vineland, Ontario, Canada
That one of the greatest hockey players of all time dabbles in the wine business is a surprise to most people. But that is the case with No. 99, which is named after Wayne Gretzky's jersey. The winery's tasting room is slick, professional and masculine.
Out front is a barbecue/picnic area and inside is a television airing loops of Gretzky's most famous plays.
The four-year-old winery makes affordable wines, such as its under $16 Founders Series. These include Riesling, Cabernet Merlot blend, Merlot and unoaked Chardonnay. It also has Estate wines that cost under $23. In that category are a Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Gewurtztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc.
Two ice wines are made by No. 99, too, an ode to this region that is only a half hour from Niagara Falls.
