Where to visit: Cutchogue, N.Y.
Castello di Borghese Vineyard & Winery was the first vineyard on the North Fork of Long Island. Now there are many in the region since the winery began in 1973.
In 1999, a Philadelphia couple (Prince Marco and Princess Ann Marie Borghese) took over the operation, giving the winery its current name.
A nice retreat from busy Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs, a cafe-like seating area allows visitors to really taste the wines and soak in the scenery. Thirteen different wines are produced here, such as Rose, Petit Chateau (Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot) and a Burgundian-style Pinot Noir.
The couple's dog, Brix, named after a wine term (the measurement of dissolved sucrose to water in a liquid), roams the property and enjoys greeting visitors.
