While performing admirably on-road, its off-road ability still needed to be demonstrated.
That would happen on giant mountains of dirt in an empty lot about a half mile away. The course was decorated with ferns to create the vague impression of a jungle. It almost worked, except for the brick walls and chilly temperature.
First, came the sideways slant. The Evoque drove along the side of a dirt berm until it felt like it was about to flop onto the passenger-side door. As uneasy as I felt, I was assured the SUV could have tilted about twice as far before putting us in any danger.
Next came a short, steep climb to the place we were about to test Land Rover's "Hill Descent Control" feature. Looking out over the hood into what looked like empty space, I took my foot completely off the brake and let the Evoque nose over down the hill.
For a moment, I felt the horrible pull of gravity take hold and I prepared myself for a sudden airbag-popping lunge straight at the pavement. Then, almost immediately, the brakes started automatically pumping, resulting in a gentle decline and an easy landing.
Point proved. Even this citified Land Rover can handle some dirt.
