Besides finding myself on a jungle path in Brooklyn, I found three things particularly surprising facts about the Evoque itself: First, it's got a four-cylinder engine. Second, it's pretty quick, thanks to a turbocharger that provides enough boost to make 240 horsepower and, more importantly, 250 foot-pounds of torque.

Third, it doesn't drink gasoline as fast as you can pump it in, unlike most Land Rover products. Getting an EPA-estimated 28 miles per gallon on the highway, in fact, it's a major leap forward compared to the rest of the line-up.

Faced with rising gas prices and demand for better fuel economy, the Evoque, hopefully, points to a promising future for Britain's iconic off-roaders.
