The Fifth Beatle
The Fifth Beatle

Stuart Sutcliffe, considered the "fifth Beatle," played bass for the band before they became famous. He later left to pursue his art. Here he is in the foreground wearing shades, with George Harrison on the left and John Lennon on the right.

The photograph was taken while the Beatles were making a name for themselves in the waterfront clubs and bars of Hamburg in the early 1960s. Sutcliffe died at 21 years old after complaining of severe headaches.
