A "Solutions Architect" is a job that bridges the gap between the C-suite and the tech geeks.
Affiliated Computer Services (a division of Xerox) is looking for candidates who are savvy in both areas to help clients achieve their goals through technology.
The right person for the job has the business acumen and maturity needed to go before a client's top corporate executives, but also the specialized tech knowledge to lead a team in implementing a wide range of IT projects, said Kathy Sadden, a senior vice president at ACS.
For example, a solutions architect may consult with a hospital. That person must have an in-depth understanding of the health care business, but also a knowledge of the tech products appropriate for the hospital's needs. He or she must also know how to present those options before the hospital's top decision-makers in a professional manner.
It's a tough position to fill because it requires candidates to be both generalists and specialists, Sadden said, and it's not uncommon for it to take as long as a year to find the right person for the job.
