I overdrink during happy hour just so I don't spend money on a full-priced drink later in the night.
I live in New York City and like to go out every weekend with my friends, but bars here are ridiculously overpriced. And the later the night gets, the more expensive and smaller the drinks get. So I started finding places with good happy hour deals, like this one place in Chelsea where I can buy one drink and get one for free.
I'll have those two drinks really fast, and then get a third and sometimes fourth drink right before the special ends, and then I don't have to drink the rest of the night. Why would I drink all night long and spend twice as much money, when I could drink early on and spend half as much?
I'm not a person to blow money on senseless things. I'm also a lightweight and have self control, so this strategy works out for me.
I'd say I often save around $30 a week (or about which adds up to more than $1,500 a year) just by taking advantage of these drink specials.
